In recent events, Russell had lost ground to teammate Kimi Antonelli, trailing by 68 points after Monaco. However, that gap has now been narrowed to 40 points, with Russell outscoring Antonelli in the last two rounds.
“The tough races definitely test you psychologically,” Russell said after his Austrian victory. “These last two weekends for me have been vitally important to remind myself I can do it.”
“Single lap and race pace have been very strong this weekend, and on a track that is probably not very well suited to my style. So I’m looking forward to heading to Silverstone next week, and seeing all the home fans; I’m sure it’s gonna be great.”
Russell’s closest contender during the race was Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, who crossed the line just a handful of seconds behind the Briton. This boost in form came at a weekend where Red Bull introduced a significant car upgrade, and the Milton Keynes-based squad’s pace did not go unnoticed by Russell.
“Max and Red Bull were incredibly quick this weekend, so kudos to them,” Russell concluded.
