Former Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko has commented on the departure of Gianpiero Lambiase from the team. Red Bull confirmed on Thursday that Lambiase, who has served as Max Verstappen’s race engineer for over a decade, will leave the Milton Keynes-based squad in 2028. Shortly after Red Bull’s announcement, McLaren revealed it had signed the 45-year-old as its chief racing engineer, where he will report to team principal Andrea Stella.
Marko, who was also a key figure in Verstappen’s inner circle until the end of 2025, emphasized that this move represents a major loss for the Dutch driver. “That’s a significant loss,” Marko stated. “The two of them were like an old married couple. They had their arguments and disagreements too.”
Verstappen and Lambiase forged one of the most successful driver-engineer partnerships in Formula 1 history, achieving four world titles and more than 70 Grand Prix victories together. However, Marko stressed that Lambiase’s influence extended far beyond managing Verstappen’s on-track activities during race weekends. “The team is large,” Marko added. “’GP’ was a key figure in car development and set-up, often pursuing his own ideas – not always in complete agreement with the rest of the technical crew.”
