Formula 1 legend and Cadillac F1 team director Mario Andretti has voiced his opinion on the performance of his team’s drivers, Valtteri Bottas and Sergio Perez, describing them as “rusty.” The 1978 F1 world champion, a key figure on the board of the sport’s newest entrant, acknowledged the team’s promising start over its first three weekends, despite not yet scoring any points.
Both Bottas and Perez made their return to the F1 grid in 2026 after a year-long hiatus in 2025, having lost their seats at Stake and Red Bull respectively following the 2024 season. Despite Bottas having some prior F1 test experience as a Mercedes reserve during his break, Andretti, who boasts 128 Grand Prix starts himself, believes their time away has impacted their current form.
“To be honest with you, I think they’re both just a little bit rusty,” Andretti remarked. “They’ve both been out of the cockpit for at least one season.” He noted that with the new car package, the drivers are exercising caution to avoid setbacks. Initial feedback from Bottas and Perez consistently points to a deficit in downforce, particularly concerning rear stability. Furthermore, optimizing the power unit’s delivery and managing battery charge remain significant challenges. Andretti highlighted that Cadillac isn’t alone in these struggles, observing that many teams, apart from Mercedes and Ferrari, are intensely working to maximize their setups.
He empathized with the drivers’ predicament: “As a driver, I think, to be able to extract everything out of the chassis itself, now, all of a sudden, you’ve got to relearn how to use the throttle, how to use everything.” Reflecting on the complexities, Andretti concluded, “I’m almost happy that I’m on the sideline.”
