Formula 1 champion Max Verstappen recently addressed his team’s disqualification from the NLS2 event at the Nordschleife, where they had initially secured a dominant victory by a margin of 59 seconds. The Dutchman participated in the four-hour race as part of his preparations for the upcoming Nürburgring 24 Hours in May, having already demonstrated his pace by claiming pole position with a two-second lead.

Verstappen piloted a Mercedes-AMG GT3 for the initial and concluding stints, with his teammates Dani Juncadella and Jules Gounon handling the intermediate sections. Following an early challenge from an Audi, the team delivered another commanding performance. However, their triumph was short-lived as they were later stripped of the win. The disqualification stemmed from the use of seven sets of tires, exceeding the permissible limit by one. This error occurred during pit stop practice in qualifying when mechanics inadvertently fitted an illegal set of tires to the car.

Despite the setback of losing the victory, Verstappen maintained a positive outlook, viewing the event as a valuable experience. “Overall, it was a fantastic weekend,” Verstappen shared with media. “My teammates and I had a really enjoyable time together. The minor error in qualifying, where an extra set of tires was used during pit stop practice, was unfortunate. But in the race itself, it’s quite straightforward, with everyone typically using four new sets. It’s certainly a pity to lose the win, but perhaps it serves as a crucial learning moment for the team, keeping them sharp. The entire operational experience was excellent, and the engineers are clearly highly skilled, given their consistent success in GT racing. So, for me, it was a truly fun weekend.”

For Verstappen, competing in GT racing fulfills a long-standing ambition, and he expressed significant satisfaction with the category. The Red Bull Racing star has frequently voiced his discontent with the current Formula 1 cars, finding them less enjoyable to drive. In contrast, he revealed that after driving the GT machinery last weekend, he was consistently stepping out of the car “smiling.” When asked if GT racing offered a level of enjoyment that F1 currently lacks, Verstappen responded: “It’s impossible to compare, but it’s something I’ve wanted to do for a while. I truly enjoy it immensely. So yes, every time I got out of the car, I was smiling, and I believe that’s always a positive sign.”
