Real Madrid recently bid farewell to several club stalwarts, and a significant departure is on the horizon later this summer, though not from within the club itself. One of their most esteemed midfielders is set to conclude his professional career.
Dani Carvajal, David Alaba, and Álvaro Arbeloa played their final games at the Bernabéu during the recent victory over Athletic Club, as Real Madrid opted not to extend their contracts. These players are seeking new opportunities, much like Luka Modrić, a former teammate of all three, did in 2025.
Modrić departed Real Madrid at the end of the 2024-25 season to join Milan. Despite an impressive debut season in Italy, he has decided it will also be his last as a professional footballer. According to Nicolo Schira, the 40-year-old midfielder intends to announce his retirement following the upcoming 2026 World Cup.
Modrić will represent Croatia at the tournament, marking the final chapter of a distinguished career. He has amassed over 850 club appearances for teams such as Tottenham Hotspur, Real Madrid, and Milan, and has earned 196 caps for his country, with the potential to surpass 200 at the World Cup.
Milan’s Champions League Snub Influenced Modrić’s Decision
The aforementioned report suggests that Modrić might have considered extending his playing career for another year had Milan secured qualification for next season’s Champions League. However, their failure to do so after a home loss to Cagliari last weekend solidified his decision, and he will now conclude his career on the grandest stage.
Real Madrid, who reportedly regretted letting Modrić depart last summer, are expected to honor him upon his retirement. He played 597 matches for the Bernabéu club over a 13-year tenure, winning 28 trophies during that period.
